Our Review of the Suunto A-Series Compass

Each of these highly technical compasses in the A-Range uses a Two Zone System. Back in the day, users had to purchase a compass balanced for one of 5 different zones. A Suunto Compass is balanced based on only the northern and southern hemispheres. This means that Suunto compasses balanced for the northern hemisphere also provide accurate readings in many northern parts of the southern hemisphere. Suunto A-Series Compasses are designed for the northern hemisphere. If you are traveling very far south into the southern hemisphere, you may want to look for a compass balanced to that location.

The A-Range compasses also have a fixed declination correction scale. This means that you cannot change the declination. For instance, in Minnesota it would read at about 4 degrees, but if you go to Alaska it's about 17 degrees. So in Alaska you'd have to do the math to get the difference. In an adjustable declination it can be changed as you travel to different regions.

It keeps me oriented

Reviewer: Anonymous , Ontario Oregon Date: January 16, 2008
I use the compass for documentation of photos I take for inspection work. I find the compass very easy to read and responsive. In Mid January it is below freezing and working fine. I keep it in a chest pocket.

A-40 Compass Review

Reviewer: Anonymous , Weare, NH Date: September 27, 2007
The A-40 is an excellent orienteering compass. For the price it will get you where you are going and more important back. It is very easy to get lost in the woods when you are hunting but this is a very reliable compass and the instructions that accompany the compass are easy to understand. With some practice, this compass made my trips into the woods very enjoyable knowing that I can rely on it to get me back.

Get where you want to go

I've used this compass in training and in the field around the world. Always quick to settle on North, easily read and adjustable based upon the GM angle for accuaracy and ease of use. Clear dial and the colored letters do not rub off.

Sunnto A-10 compass: useless at low temperatures

1
Reviewer: Anonymous , CA Date: June 25, 2006
It worked perfectly except for the only time I needed it: at 12000ft and well below freezing, I wanted to know where were we heading to, and guess what: an air bubble formed inside the liquid, and the needle was stuck. As soon as we got back in a warm room, it started working again. If anyone wants one, I give it for free. For me it's useless.
