Our Review of the Suunto M-2
An affordable, highly accurate orienteering compass, the Suunto M-2 Compass features an adjustable declination. A benefit usually found on more expensive models, an adjustable declination allows you to resolve the relationship between true north and magnetic north depending on your location, an essential feature for accurate orienteering in the wilderness. A small brass key at the end of the lanyard turns the declination to the desired point.
The 4X magnifying lens on the base plate ensures that you see every detail on your map. Easy-to-read luminous markings allow for readings at night or in low-light conditions. The serrated bezel ring and jewel bearing make for effortless and precise direction-taking. The M-2 has 3 scales on the sides of the base plate for accurate map-to-compass translation: inches, 1:24,000, and 1:62,500 map scales.
The Suunto M-2 Compass uses a Two Zone System to achieve precise measurement. Back in the day, users had to purchase a compass balanced for one of 5 different zones. A Suunto compass is balanced based on only the northern and southern hemispheres. This means that Suunto compasses balanced for the northern hemisphere also provide accurate readings in many northern parts of the southern hemisphere. The Suunto M-2 is designed for the northern hemisphere. If you are traveling very far south into the southern hemisphere, you may want to look for a Suunto compass balanced to that location.
Comparison: Serious adventurers who need global accuracy should consider the Suunto M-3 Compass. The Suunto M-3 features an adjustable declination and comes in two models: The Suunto M-3DL, which uses a two-zone system balanced to the northern hemisphere and the Suunto M-3G, balanced to provide accurate readings anywhere on the globe.
