Our Review of the Suunto M-3

For the avid adventurer who needs to know where they are anywhere in the world, the Suunto M-3 Compass features an adjustable declination and comes in two models: The Suunto M-3DL, which uses a two-zone system balanced to the northern hemisphere and the Suunto M-3G, balanced to provide accurate readings anywhere on the globe.

The adjustable declination allows you to resolve the relationship between true north and magnetic north depending on your location, an essential feature for precise orienteering in the wilderness. A small brass key at the end of the lanyard turns the declination to the desired point. The M-3 has 3 scales on the sides of the base plate for accurate map-to-compass translation: inches, 1:24,000, and 1:62,500 map scales.

The 4X magnifying lens on the base plate ensures that you see every detail on your map. Easy-to-read luminous markings allow for readings at night or in low-light conditions. The serrated bezel ring and jewel bearing make for effortless and precise readings. The ergonomically designed base plate includes anti-slip rubber pads and rounded edges for comfortable holding. Marking holes make for easy drawing of control points.

Comparison: The Suunto M-2 features an adjustable declination and 3-scale markings, but forgoes the global needle option and anti-slip rubber pads.

I am an active Scout leader and have used this compass for past 11 years, also an active hunter (pack in type), backpacker, etc and this compass has been my standard for reliability. I especially appreciate the ability to accurately change the declination to coincide with the longitude. I would recoomend this with no equivication
