Our Review of the Suunto X10/X10 Military

Add juice to your Suunto with the Suunto Solar Charger SPX.900. Using solar panel technology, the SPX.900 charges portable electronics, including the X10. It's ideal for use in the backcountry or as a green alternative to traditional outlet charging. Because the SPX.900 uses a USB cable to connect to your electronic devices, it can be used to charge mobile phones, PDA's, and MP3 players.

Suunto commemorates 10 years with the Suunto X10. When you're trekking through a new frontier, adventure racing, biking, fishing, or conducting field operations, the Suunto X10 provides critical decision-making data. With full GPS functionality, including route planning and uploading, as well as outdoor essentials like an altimeter, barometer, and compass, the Suunto X10 wristop computer shows nature who's boss.

Standout Features:

  • Faster GPS performance than any other Suunto Watch
  • Top notch GPS tracking in difficult conditions, such as when you're in a storm or thick jungle
  • Long battery life and universal USB chargeability
  • Plan routes on your PC and upload them to your watch
  • Calculate speed, distance, direction, and time to your next waypoint
  • Find home
  • Includes altimeter, barometer, and compass
  • 100 m water resistant
  • Complete watch functions: calendar, alarm, dual time, and stop watch

What Does the Suunto X10 Do?

GPS Watch: Go beyond north and south with a GPS watch that knows where you are going and knows how to get you back to base camp. Plan your trek at home and upload the route to the X10. The X10 GPS watch is compatible with National Geographic TOPO! Maps, Google Earth, and Fugawi.

Also included with the X10 and free for download from Suunto.com is the Suunto Track Exporter PC software, which makes route planning and waypoint programming, fast, accurate and simple.

Going where you've never gone before? The X10 records your tracks, which you can save or use to find your way home. Found the perfect swimming whole? Mark the coordinates on your watch.

Altimeter Watch: Measure your altitude from the lowest points of Death Valley to the highest peak of Mount Everest. Suunto altimeters measure elevation using air-pressure. An altimeter is useful for a load of outdoor activities, including running, biking, hiking, skiing, or snowboarding.

Barometer Watch: Know when to take shelter from a storm and when to carry on. A barometer measures atmospheric pressure in order to forecast weather.

Compass Watch: Know your direction at all times. The standard version of the X10 uses degrees while the military version uses Mils. Mils spaces the compass to 6400 units, with the value being that one mil delimits one meter at the distance of one kilometer.

Who is the X10 best for?

Anyone with an adventurous spirit will love the Suunto X10. Professionals such as mountain guides, explorers, outdoor professionals, members of the military, and law enforcement officers make critical decisions based on the X10's information. Avid trekkers, adventure racers, bikers, hunters, and fishermen will find a lot to love in the X10's GPS, altimeter, barometer, and compass capabilities.

The Suunto X10 Military Watch adds to the already full-featured X10 a red back light and a compass that measures in mils or degrees.

It does get better each iteration, at least...

Product Review of X10: Amazing technology! I've owned X9, X9i and X10, and a couple of non-GPS Suuntos. Plus highlights: Coolness factor--Extreme. Smallest, lightest weight GPS watch (excuse me, wrist computer ;-) made, still, I think. USB charging, and data transfer. Gets GPS fix fast. GPS very sensitive--works in heavy forest on wrist while walking, usually, and inside my wood frame house! Accurate barometer. Accurate flux-gate compass with automatic mag declination from GPS position (sweet!). Minus highlights: Reliability not so great.... No Mac OS software, still! Battery life for GPS use not quite long enough--If I hiked, ;-) I'd want to be able to hike all day and not worry about dead battery. No safegard against running battery dead (and losing all the memory). Buttons very hard to push. User interface terrible and different from all other devices I have seen. Terrible, fragile, supposedly improved faceplate design--when faceplate breaks, GPS antenna is exposed and almost guaranteed to break. Wristband fragile and not long enough for largish build male, too long for female. Rather have red LED backlight at night. Oh, did I mention no Mac software? As happy as I am about the excellent customer service and the incredible technology this product puts on my wrist, I am annoyed and disappointed that Suunto spends the effort and considerable resources needed to develop the technology for a cutting edge product like this, but doesn't follow through with the design, engineering and manufacturing resources needed to make it robust and reliable. This is a very cool toy and conversation piece, and it can be used as a research/survival/exploring tool, but it could be so much better.

Suunto X10 was a dream purchase. The first watch lasted 2 days. I returned it and received a new one with a little delay, but no hassle (customer service was excellent). The new one has worked great, but the face has peeled and the watch seperated from the band without any trauma and only after a few months... Great functions for my job, but I don't think it will last long...

Suunto X10

Reviewer: Stanley O-D , Pleasant Valley, NY Date: October 09, 2009
I bought a Suunto Vector in 1999 and lived with it everday, come to rely on it and just plain love it. Now to reward myself for hard work, I shopped for Suunto's latest product, the X10, I chose this store and they have delivered the product faultlessly. I will buy from Suuntowatches.com in the future. I have been on two hikes so far with the X10 and I do like it when it knows more than me, to me that means I have much to look forward to with this watch, and much more to learn and that will keep me using it. With such a short ownership I hardly can speak to reliability, however my Suunto Vector never let me down, I purchesed this X10 for the same reason. And the software....that never came with the Vector, gotta love it with the X10. Also my kids are Suunto owners....this product works for me !!

Good feature set, but needs some more work

3
Reviewer: Tom , Netherlands Date: September 22, 2009
I just received my Suunto X10 mil and I really like it. The looks are great, the feature set is great and I can't wait to go out hiking. I only have one problem with it (and after some googling more people seem to have the same problem) the bezel/bevel is not up to par. For an outdoor watch I expect it to be durable. But after just one day (!) of wearing to work (office!) the bezel already has scratches. And I have been extremely careful, sitting at my desk. So that is the major flaw in my opinion. 3 instead of 5 stars.

Not worth the price tag

Reviewer: Anonymous , Sumter, South Carolina Date: September 13, 2009
I own a 9XI-Military GPS Suunto Watch. I like the Barometer, Temperature, Alarm, Compass and Stop Watch Features of the watch. In the 2 years of owning the watch, I was able to successfully use the GPS 1 time. In the first 7 months, the top carbonfiber cover crumbled and I had to send my watch back. I thought that exposing it to water caused the piece to deteriorate and break. So when I received my watch back from customer service, I refrained from exposing it to water. 17 months later, the carbon fiber piece has fallen apart again, the GPS still doesn't function like it should and now my battery dies when the indicator shows 75% of battery life left. This watch may look cool and have cool features, but it is definately not worth the $550 I paid for it. I will not buy another GPS watch from Suunto, however, I will buy a different watch from them in the future. I say this because I really like their hassle free and customer oriented Customer Service.

Suunto X-10

Reviewer: Anonymous , Hudson, WI Date: July 18, 2009
I am an avid Suunto fan with 7 Suunto watches of different makes to support my active lifestyle. The X10 has some of the same issues that the X9 had in terms of the face plate rings. Both the X9 and the X10 need new technology to support their face plate strength and durability. Either the face plate ring comes unglued from the 3M pads or it does not fair well to temp changes and they crack. My X10 face plate (plastic ring around the face) cracked and it's 1 month old. It was not being used outdoors and the temps were roughly a 30 degree swing from 100F to 70F in 5 minutes and the plate cracked in half while on my wrist. Disappointing.

compare x9mi - x10mi

3
Reviewer: Dacoty , Ft. Lewis, WA Date: June 16, 2009
I purchased the x9mi and WAS looking to upgrade to the x10mi. After reading the reviews I see the same problems exist; the bezel cover begins to peal and the Nav interface software still has problems. A number of my compadres that also purchased the x9mi experienced the same issue and were very disappointed. Product support was unable to help with the software issue. The rest of the features work great, I have had my x9mi in Iraq and Alaska, altitude and barometer, compass and GPS all work great. The temp works better off your wrist or on top of gloves to be accurate. I wish you could get the software to work I really wanted to track my way points. My watch looks pretty tacky at this point that's why I was looking for the upgrade and had hoped the software glitch would have beem fixed. R&D should look into this maybe x11mi will have the solution?

x10 military

Reviewer: Matt , Phoenix, AZ Date: April 13, 2009
After receiving the x10 I was excited and got right to learning all the features it has. It does everything it says and the gps gets a quick read. Approx. 1-2 min. As far as durability--well lets just say it's not really up to the standards I feel Suunto should have for this rather expensive device. The bezel will start to unseat itself within 1 month if you wear it every day. The bezel also loses it's protective coating in that same time and begins to look like cheap rubber. I didn't mind that so much, but after disassembling the casing/band and viewing the bezel I noticed the bezel's side tabs were broke due to poor design. I had to buy some 3m two sided tape to keep the bezel attached. Another huge problem I'm dealing with is trying to get the Track Exporter software to work. I've tried everthing and without it you can't plan trips, view your routes--nothing. I'm really disappointed because this thing works and has potential.
