Our Review of the Suunto X3HR

On Sale for $152.99! Regularly priced at $169.99. Save $17 (10%)

The Suunto X3HR is 'the' training watch for the active outdoorsperson. It integrates an altimeter function with a heart rate monitor - to keep a pulse on you and your environment. This unique combo lets you get the most out of your outdoor workouts. The altimeter monitors terrain variations during running, triathlon training, hiking, and mountain or road biking. Weather functions allow you to predict weather changes and plan accordingly. The heart rate monitor gives comprehensive feedback on your performance. The smaller overall size is ideal for men and women who don't like oversized watches and/or have smaller wrists.

The X3HR will help you monitor and analyze your training sessions. The heart rate monitor component displays average heart rate in real-time throughout your workout, allowing you to accurately manage your performance. The stand-out feature on this watch is the graphic heart rate display. While other monitors simply show (numerically) high, low, and current heart rates, the X3HR charts the data; providing you with a quick and complete visual of your performance. The display constantly shows your current heart rate and target zone - a great way to control intensity. (Note: this advanced feature is only available on the X3HR - the X6HR doesn't have it.)

The Suunto X3HR's interval timers let you circuit-train with precision and intensity. Post-performance, data is stored on your training duration, average, minimum and maximum heart rate, ascent and descent levels, and peak and valley altitudes of your training session. It stores up to 10 split times (with the corresponding heart rate), and up to 8 separate training sessions. As with other Suunto altimeter watches, you can log your altitude gains and losses. (For example, you can see how many vertical feet you skied in a day.)

Upgrades for the X3HR:

  • longer, more flexible strap: fits large and small wrists well
  • easier to read, size-optimized display: good readability of heart-rate, altitude, & timing functions while you're training
  • sporty new color option: Ice

mixed thoughts on dead watch

4
Reviewer: Duncan , Bozeman, MT Date: October 29, 2009
Well, it's finally dead. After just over two years (warranty's over, just like a car, right?). Too bad, because I really liked many features of this watch. The altimeter, record features and thermometer were awesome, even though the t-meter was pretty much reading the temp at my skin. My problem was with the durability - easily scratched lens, fogged up lens from sweat - never mind water - and parts falling off/apart. And so that brought me in contact with customer service. YIKES! I do hope they've changed, but a little plastic piece on the side of the lens took 3 MONTHS to replace and get back to me. (and it was just sent to CA, not overseas.) When the strap broke, after a few calls, I was able to get a strap sent, even tho it took a bit of discussion. So when water got in thru an old gasket and fried the poor thing, what with the warranty being up, I've decided to bury the watch. I would love to get another Suunto, if only I had some reassurance regarding durability and customer service. This rating is really at more of a 3.5-3.75 stars.

Comments from The Staff:

Thank you so much for your review! I apologize you had issues with Suunto customer service. It is not common that we hear that our customers had issues with their warranty claims with Suunto. Actually, Suunto makes it pretty easy for you to resolve warranty issues during their 2-year warranty period. The secret to reaching Suunto is to surf over to www.Suunto.com. Once there, click the Support Center tab and go to Suunto Service Request. They pride themselves in returning the repaired or replaced watch in just 7 days in most cases!

Please feel free to contact us with any other questions or concerns you may have and thanks again for the feedback!

Thanks,
Melissa T.

Very nice, slightly flawed

I have had this watch for three years now, and I can say this has become one of my all-time favorites. Accurate HR readings, very intuituve and informative triple-readout stopwatch and a training feature that seems limitless. There are only three issues; one, the fact that the thermometer positively sucks, two that the training mode has many features that are totally incomprehensible, and three, the only major problem, is the fact that the battery cover is made of the cheapest, crappiest plastic on the planet. I've only changed the battery three times in the lifespan of this watch, and the cover is already irretrievably stripped out. It needs a LARGE coin (it really helps to be Canadian, because you have the toonie) and a lot of force to remove the cover, and if you muck about in dirty conditions like I do, the cover gets frustratingly stuck (the second time I needed two people and a pair of mathematical dividers to pry off the cover. Otherwise, amazing. Uses a very standard CR2032 battery, can stand up to an otherworldly pounding, and is extremely durable. Highly, highly recommended.

Nice watch for the price

Reviewer: Matt , Kaiserslautern, Germany Date: July 29, 2009
I received this watch as a gift, and it is my first heart rate monitor. Overall a good watch would recommend to a first time buyer, but probably would not buy another one. Would like to have a calories burned feature. PROS: Easy to use after a few times scrolling through the menu. Large enough display for me easily see heart rate either running or cycling. Memory functionn stores lots of information. Not really useful for me but fun to see what I did. Rubber wrist band that does not smell. CONS: Large buttons easily get pushed during daily activity. Rather annoying when trying to take someone's pulse during an emergency and you look down to see your last training session displayed. Heart rate strap often comes undone during sprints. Heart rate strap range not all that great. When my arms are fully extended the watch loses my heart rate. Temperature not all that accurate as it is just ambient temp.

Good Features, bad band

Reviewer: Anonymous , Vermont Date: July 04, 2009
I bought the X3HR 3 months ago and really like the heart rate and altimeter features. The scroll button pushes against my wrist, so I have to keep scrolling back to the screen I want, but that is not major. The clip on the end of the band fell off, and got lost. Replacement bands are back ordered for who knows how long. Can't use the watch since only 1 band will fit.

Versatile Suunto Watch

Reviewer: Anonymous , UT, Salt Lake Date: December 02, 2008
I've had my Suunto watch for about 2 years now and love it. I wear it to the Gym, Running, Hiking, Camping, Snowboarding, Biking, and about any other activity I do. It works great and I have had no problems with it. For the price, this watch can't be beat. I have since bought 3 other Suunto watches to gift to family. Great products.

hard to learn but lots of data

I'm used to the Polar watch interface so the buttons on the Suunto take some learning. It works with the Polar WearLink transmitter unlike my HighGear/New Balance watches. I like all the info Memory displays: Max HR, Min HR, avg for each lap, etc. Lots of nice details, incl. altitude gained and lost. But it takes some reading of the manual to take advantage of these features.

Backordered???

This is a pretty okay watch other than the fact that the watch band is terrible, and good luck buying a replacement. And at $20, its 1/5th of the watch's price. You will need another one within a year. Also, I wish there was a lock function for the buttons for physical activities that cause your wrist to hit the oversized buttons. I love the features, just with this watch didn't physically fall apart so quickly
