Our Review of the Suunto X3HR

The Suunto X3HR is 'the' training watch for the active outdoorsperson. It integrates an altimeter function with a heart rate monitor - to keep a pulse on you and your environment. This unique combo lets you get the most out of your outdoor workouts. The altimeter monitors terrain variations during running, triathlon training, hiking, and mountain or road biking. Weather functions allow you to predict weather changes and plan accordingly. The heart rate monitor gives comprehensive feedback on your performance. The smaller overall size is ideal for men and women who don't like oversized watches and/or have smaller wrists.

The X3HR will help you monitor and analyze your training sessions. The heart rate monitor component displays average heart rate in real-time throughout your workout, allowing you to accurately manage your performance. The stand-out feature on this watch is the graphic heart rate display. While other monitors simply show (numerically) high, low, and current heart rates, the X3HR charts the data; providing you with a quick and complete visual of your performance. The display constantly shows your current heart rate and target zone - a great way to control intensity. (Note: this advanced feature is only available on the X3HR - the X6HR doesn't have it.)

The Suunto X3HR's interval timers let you circuit-train with precision and intensity. Post-performance, data is stored on your training duration, average, minimum and maximum heart rate, ascent and descent levels, and peak and valley altitudes of your training session. It stores up to 10 split times (with the corresponding heart rate), and up to 8 separate training sessions. As with other Suunto altimeter watches, you can log your altitude gains and losses. (For example, you can see how many vertical feet you skied in a day.)

Upgrades for the X3HR:

  • longer, more flexible strap: fits large and small wrists well
  • easier to read, size-optimized display: good readability of heart-rate, altitude, & timing functions while you're training
  • sporty new color option: Ice

hard to learn but lots of data

I'm used to the Polar watch interface so the buttons on the Suunto take some learning. It works with the Polar WearLink transmitter unlike my HighGear/New Balance watches. I like all the info Memory displays: Max HR, Min HR, avg for each lap, etc. Lots of nice details, incl. altitude gained and lost. But it takes some reading of the manual to take advantage of these features.

Backordered???

This is a pretty okay watch other than the fact that the watch band is terrible, and good luck buying a replacement. And at $20, its 1/5th of the watch's price. You will need another one within a year. Also, I wish there was a lock function for the buttons for physical activities that cause your wrist to hit the oversized buttons. I love the features, just with this watch didn't physically fall apart so quickly

Nice heart rate monitor

Reviewer: Mike , Hampton, VA Date: May 01, 2008
I like the X3HR, it has nice useful features, but like everyone else said, the temperature is ambiant so it is going to be a little higher when it is being worn. but I mount it on my bike handlebars and it reads fine. The heart rate seems accurate the only thing that gets a little frustrating is that whenever I go by a high power transformer or something with lots of electromagnetic energy I lose my signal for HR info until I have passed by it. It is the only bad thing I can think of.

Is is a Suunto?

Reviewer: Anonymous , Johannesburg Date: February 14, 2008
Pros: Looks great! Easy to read with a neat display. Easy to use. Comfortable fit. Service staff friendly. Cons: The rubber pieces near the display are coming off after 1 month. The screen is plastic. Difficult to check time while reading heart rate. Watch requires you to exit training mode and requires two button presses as if the timer is on, you can only exit using the top button which scrolls through the memory menu before going to time. A bit annoying. Had a shower last night and my watch is going in for repairs today as there is now water inside. The unit is two months old.

Year One

Reviewer: Darryl , Parker, CO Date: January 28, 2008
Received the X3hr as a birthday gift 04/07. Has worked well and gets a lot of use. Was a little surprised that the battery life was short (8 months). Could be a factory battery issue, we'll see. Overall, very satisfied with the watch. It does take a little patience (which I have none) to reset the watch after the battery dies. Thankfully, the instructions were online!

Polar is a better value

Reviewer: Anonymous , Charlotte, NC Date: November 05, 2007
My transmitter went bad within 3 months of purchase, and it took Suunto almost two months to get me a replacement. Now (less than 2 years later) my watch has gone bad, and when I put a new battery in it, the display goes crazy when I hit the light button and then eventually goes blank.

Comments from the Staff

The watch is still under warranty (2 years). Consider contacting Suunto direct to ask for all-new equipment; 800-543-9124. These issues are certainly the exception rather than the rule, I'm sorry you got glitchy equipment. Thanks for your feedback

Scratchy face

This is the second x3hr I've owned. They're great, but the face of these watches seems to get scratched easier than any other watch.

Good Dependable HR Watch

3
Reviewer: George , Dublin, CA Date: July 28, 2007
I've owned my Suunto X3HR for about one year. I have only replaced the battery once. The band is holding up well and is easy to remove and replace. The temp data does seem to be always off (too high). The X3HR functions are easy to use. Even though it is not made in Finland, the quality is excellent for the price. I do wish the watch had mineral glass instead of plastic. Plastic does scratch so be careful. The rubber border around the bezel is also starting to lift. The display is easier to read than the T series but the T series Suunto watches will give you additional HR data.
