Our Review of the Suunto X9M/i

The Suunto X9M/i ("Military") is a new version of Suunto's incredible X9i Global Positioning System wristop computer, designed specifically for Military professionals looking for the ultimate field watch. The array of functions offered with a Suunto X9i GPS watch is still there in the X9M/i, but with some added features that make this watch even more valuable to our friends in the Military, both at home and abroad.

The Suunto X9M/i allows you to plan routes through the field of operations and save them into your watch, which will advise you as to your bearing and the right direction to take to get to your next way point, as well as the way back. Just select the 'find home' feature and your Suunto X9M/i GPS watch will guide you along the route and provide the distance between your current position and "home".

  • To stay out in the field with your Suunto X9M/i GPS Watch longer than ever before, check out the Solio Solar Hybrid Charger - a solar charger for your Suunto and other handheld devices

You can also head out into the field without a preset route, and use your X9M/i to keep track of your position, speed, and distance traveled. It will record your progression, which you can save for later analysis, as well as use as a guide to return to your original position, or anywhere along you're route. With the X9M/i you'll still get all the standard Suunto watch functions, plus GPS with global functionality and digital mapping service, as well as an altimeter, compass, barometer, and thermometer. (For a full listing of the vast array of features for the X9M/i, check the 'features' tap below.)

New Features exclusive to the X9M/i are of particular usefulness to those in the field:

  • 360 Degree Compass
  • 6400 MILS bearing display *
  • Black on Black coloring
  • Red Backlight for safe use at night

*MILS is another way of reading a compass that the military guys use.  Instead of zero to 360 degrees like normal compasses, they read from 0 to 6400 mils.

Be sure to also check out the Suunto X9i, which offers two colors.

NOTE:  Suunto X9-series watches and corresponding Suunto PC software are not Mac-compatible.

Extreeme heat

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Puyallup, WA Date: June 01, 2008
While stationed in Iraq I used many functions of the X9Mi. The barometer was very accurate reading temp and presure from 29 degrees to 126 degrees. the alt was verified while flying in Blackhawks and very accurate as well as the nav feature compass headings are right on. the red lumination insures reading clearity at night. The only fault I experienced was the face plate started coming apart and the protective function cover starts to come apart ftom the heat. Overall I am very pleased with the watch, the next test will be the extreeme cold of Alaska.

Life With X9M/i

3
Reviewer: Peter Greenway , Oxfordshire Date: May 29, 2008
Having had the watch for a few days and getting used to it I think I would make the following comments / observations: 1. The daytime display is not very bright and I quite often find myself using the backlight to view it. It needs its own contrast / brightness setting ( like the backlight ). 2. The GPS is very poor under a foliage canopy. 3. I am highly suspect about the altitude readings it gives out - these tend to over estimate height according to my Garmin 60csx 4. I would like to see a short cut key to re-display the time easily. 5. A setting for automatically restablishing GPS connectivity would be very useful indeed. 6. Navigating to a pre-stored waypoint is to involved. It should be simplified. 7. Would like to see a method of upgrading the firmware via software to give it some longevity. 8. Software needs to be ported to a Mac. Its a pain having to use a PC for the track manager. It also needs the ability to export in GPX format. .. fab looking watch though and despite my comments I love it.

Suunto X9Mi

3
Reviewer: Anonymous , Hartford, CT Date: May 23, 2008
Great looking watch! I just received mine and was able to get a first GPS fix within about 10 minutes in open ground. The instructions were somewhat challenging specifically between the activity and navigation modes? After loading the provided disk drivers and the Trek Manager Program, I still have NOT been able to communicate with the X9 and the Trek Manager/Exporter Programs which keep indicating "Not Found". The X9 display shows a connection and the PC assigns an appropriate com port as with most external devices. I have even disabled all active/running programs and still no success. Also attempted connection using a different PC with no luck? This is very frustrating with such an expensive watch. After four phones calls with Suunto tech dept I was unable to resolve this issue (very disapointing!!!!) In keeping my chin up, I contacted the retailer and they are shipping me a new X9 Mi (great retailer customer service). It would have seemed logical just to have sent me a new cable to try as the original would not work on two different PC's? KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED ON THE NEW X9 Mi.

GREAT WATCH !

5
Reviewer: Anonymous , Ft Lewis, Washington Date: April 27, 2008
I have been wearing Suunto Watches for years. Ever since I was issued one I have not worn anything else. I am a vivid fan of the Vector and the X-Lander, Until the day I wore the X9MI. Now I will never wear anything else. This watch has been everything and more as expected. Unfortunately I cannot provide any information about what I do as it violates OPSEC but I just want Suunto to know this is the best watch in your inventory. I don't know what else you can do to improve it. I have had mine for 1 year and I have never had any problems with the watch or the GPS. I have not used the GPS to the point where my battery has run down, but I will tell you if you can follow the instructions it will work perfect. One flaw I do have with the watch is the complicated instructions, but once I figured it out there has never been any problems. I really cannot see how you can improve this watch without charging a arm and a leg. Bottom line I don't think I will wear anything else.

Brilliant piece of kit

5
Reviewer: Sanjit Bal , New Delhi, India Date: April 04, 2008
I just bought mine 2weeks back. It took me a little while to understand the manual and I wish it was written in a more user friendly manner. The watch itself is superb. I tested while driving at 110 KM per hour and it kept a superb signal. I was able to download that run to Google Earth and it was accurate. I wish this was a solar powered piece of kit, but I am fine with the way it is. If you are reading this as prospective buyer, go right ahead.

X9Mi Design Flaw

2
Reviewer: 1SG EDDIE SMITH , TN Date: March 23, 2008
I have owned an X9Mi since Aug 2006 and have had to send it back for repair three times. The watch face has 4 plastic tabs (for lack of a better description) that hold the watch facing to the watch body, and the right side of the watch facing will break where the 'tabs' hold the watch facing to the watch body. I suggest that you only wear this watch as a backup GPS when needed. Also, the GPS can be painfully slow to lock on to your position.

Comments from The Staff:

According to Suunto, this issue (which had been somewhat of a frequent complaint) has been resolved. I'd suggest contacting Suunto once more to see how they might be able to provide a retroactive solution for your X9Mi. Thanks for your feedback.

PERFORMS PER MANUAL

5
Reviewer: Anonymous , Honolulu, HI Date: February 08, 2008
This watch is outstanding and performs exactly as specified in the manual. The GPS performs exactly per the manual and requires the conditions as per the manual. Everybody complaining about this watch should have pre-downloaded the manual from Suunto's website and read it. The watch is extremely easy to navigate through if you know how to read and understand instructions. I picked up 5/7 satellites the first time I used the GPS with no problems at all. I set everything to sync or auto and let the GPS do the rest. You people who expect more out of this watch need to get a clue. This watch performs per the manual and nothing else. Sure you can't run with it or hike with it and acquire a GPS fix, but that's not what it is suppose to do. For it's size it is an amazing piece of electronic equipment. Do your research before you purchase this watch and make sure you know what your getting. Don't buy it and give a bad review because of lack of research and understanding of how the watch works.

NO Sugar Coating, Cut and dry review

Reviewer: Anonymous , Baghdad, Iraq Date: February 05, 2008
I wont bore you with a techie review. and forgive the spelling for I only have an arabic keyboard :-) but here it is cut and dry. I was skeptical to buy this watch after some of the reviews that i've read on suunto.com however if you are looking for a versitile time piece, that does just about everything this is it. Some people complained about the carbon fiber looking glass housing being weak or falling off. This is not the case at all it is a sturdy, well built watch that in my opinion can take a beating and still get you where you need to go. Yes the instructions can be confusing at times but the CD provided with the watch does explain everything you need to get you started. You don't have to be the smartest guy to figure it out, those who complained about it being difficult to understand or operate most likley didnt read the instructions. Heck i didnt even need them. now the features. The compass works great, even giving u a declination to set if you wish, the alt, baro not to shabby in its own. the GPS works great *IF* you do as the instructions say and let it set for about 15-20 mins its first time you start it up and let it SYNC. on average after the initial sinking it only takes me about 4-5 mins to start tracking satalites, and this is in baghdad. you have the option of choosing gps track every second, 4 seconds and manual i believe, however if you use the constant track dont expect your battery to last longer then 4 or 5 hours. i would not use this as your primary GPS device but makes a GREAT back up. the features are all just about right, tracking, find home, etc etc. i personally have not had any problems with this watch. are there better out there.. maybe so.. is this watch worth the price.. it just might be.. hell it could save your life some day. keep in mind. suunto states that the watch is good for about 500 charges before the battery needs replaced. however if you use it as a watch, bari, alt, alarm, stop watch etc etc you can get a good 2 months out of each charge. hope this helped SSG Stone 3-89 CAV
