Introducing the Suunto X9i - the new and improved version of the Suunto's X9, voted "Best Product of 2004" by Fortune Magazine. Now available in two colors, the X9i combines GPS functionality with an altimeter, barometer, compass, and thermometer ... all these instruments, packed into a single watch.
With the X9i GPS watch, you can plan routes at home with a map, and save them into your watch. When you're out in the field, your watch will advise you on which way to go, as well as tell you how fast you're moving, how far you've traveled, how far you still have to go, and when you'll be arriving at your destination. Mark a "home" position, and you'll be able to hit "find home" from anywhere and get the route and distance back.
Or, you can go adventuring without a route in mind, and use the X9i to keep track of your position, speed and distance. It will record your tracks, which you can save for later analysis, or use immediately to find your way back. Whenever you locate a place of interest, such as a great fishing spot, a camp site, or a stunning view, it's easy to save the coordinates into your watch, naming the location whatever you'd like. Overall, the X9i is the pinnacle of wristop navigational computers; it was made with hikers, mountaineers, trekkers, hunters, fishermen, and other outdoors-lovers in mind, and it shows.

Good technology, miserable casing

Please forgive the lousy rating, but a watch promoted as outdoor equipment should be constructed accordingly. This watch is not: The problem lies in the faceplate, which comes off too easily. Right now, for example, my watch has a gap between the faceplate and the plastic casing - clearly a hazard.
I would have given this watch 5 stars considering its reliable, easy-to-use GPS and tasteful design. But Suunto really needs to solve the casing problem. This problem also persists with their new military version, as you can read from an Afghanistan veteran's review there.
I must stress, however, the excellence of Suunto costumer service: They arrange to have defect watches collected within a few days' notice, free of charge.

Suunto X9i pros and cons

Having been an owner of the X9i for a year I'm pleased with its overall performance and can confirm thats its GPS abilities have succeeded where other industry receivers have failed. My one problem with the unit is its ruggedness. After a knock one of the face plate retaining lugs broke. For such a high spec watch a better securing could be found.
