Our Review of the Suunto X9i

The Suunto X9i wristtop computer is compatible with the following software:

Now Compatible With TOPO!   Google Earth and your X9i

Introducing the Suunto X9i - the new and improved version of the Suunto's X9, voted "Best Product of 2004" by Fortune Magazine. Now available in two colors, the X9i combines GPS functionality with an altimeter, barometer, compass, and thermometer ... all these instruments, packed into a single watch.

With the X9i GPS watch, you can plan routes at home with a map, and save them into your watch. When you're out in the field, your watch will advise you on which way to go, as well as tell you how fast you're moving, how far you've traveled, how far you still have to go, and when you'll be arriving at your destination. Mark a "home" position, and you'll be able to hit "find home" from anywhere and get the route and distance back.

Or, you can go adventuring without a route in mind, and use the X9i to keep track of your position, speed and distance. It will record your tracks, which you can save for later analysis, or use immediately to find your way back. Whenever you locate a place of interest, such as a great fishing spot, a camp site, or a stunning view, it's easy to save the coordinates into your watch, naming the location whatever you'd like. Overall, the X9i is the pinnacle of wristop navigational computers; it was made with hikers, mountaineers, trekkers, hunters, fishermen, and other outdoors-lovers in mind, and it shows.

US Army Soldiers Review

Reviewer: SPC. Oexman , Djibouti , Africa Date: March 04, 2008
I bought this watch after a NCO with me scored one....I liked its options...being CSAR "Combat Search and Rescue" the need for a compass and GPS is a must...specialy a compass you can wear and have your weapon hand free....initially I was disapointed in the watch...but that was my bad...the GPS never worked...but the camp I am on has tons of antenna and sat dishes everywhere...I took it to the field and turned on the GPS and immediatly got signal and a good lock...only 3 or 4 meters away from my original location according to google earth..I now trust this unit and would not hesitate to use it if needed to set up a HLZ...of course garmins are a primary...but a wrist top one under fire is better instead of digging in a pocket or bag .....I think if you wanted a good watch with lots of features...looks..and ruggedness this is the way to go..if you lost your bag with your main gear then this would be a valuable asset....the price is fair...most gear junkies like myself spend 5 times as much on our weapons anyway...why not a spare GPS device...HooAhhh Where was I at when testing?.... Djibouti ,Africa on the outer running trail... 11°33'1.77"N 43°10'2.14"E

Great form-factor, poor reception

3
Reviewer: Anonymous , Montreal, Canada Date: January 13, 2008
While this GPS offers a great form factor, I found that it suffers from bad reception. I hadn't manage to get the initial GPS fix with 40% of visible sky after 1h30; I needed to go in a parking lot where I could see much more sky and I finally got a fix on 6 sats. After 15 minutes of initial soaking, I began to use the watch. Whenever it had a clear sky view it worked great but, as soon as the sky was not fully visible, it gave poor results. I was looking for something which was worry-free (wear&forget) and this is not. If you want to keep an accurate tracking of your path, you'll have to be careful with it. On another topic, the included software is a bit rough but at least it's possible to export your trackpoints in a CSV file. I would have liked if it did not need drivers/softwares and emulated something like a USB key. That would have helped when used on foreign computers.

Good Functioning Wristwatch Navigation Unit

3
Reviewer: Patrick Malarkey , Truckee, CA Date: December 28, 2007
My watch was a gift from my brother who could not figure out how to use its functions. I will admit it took a while to figure out the navigation functions but it has been a good tool for backcountry skiing, long cross country runs or mountain biking trips. It has provided helpful informaiton in route finding and monitoring changes in the weather. My only complaint is with the battery life. The rechargeable battery only lasts about 4 hours in the GPS mode when the updates are set to short intervals. This can be resolved by changing the intervals to update less frequently. This can be problem if your ripping down a mountain and need the info fast. I also like to travel lite and don't want to carry the charger and then wait for the charge. This has not been a big problem but I could see it could be if I was in an area where I am not familiar with the terrain. I too have not figured out how to download my statistics or routes and a heart rate monitor would be a nice function like my Sunnto Advisor. Oh yeah, regarding the customer service they have been great. I cracked the bezal and they responded immediately.

Don't believe the bad reviews....

Reviewer: Jeff , Victoria, Australia Date: December 18, 2007
I read a lot about the X9i before buying one. My greatest concern was that the GPS receiver would loose it's signal under tree cover. As I race sled dogs in Canada so I wanted a small light unit that would stand up to -40C (I know it's only rated to -20C but it still works down to -40C under a parka). The first thing I did was test out the GPS. I found that it worked really really well. True - not as good as some of my hand held units - but still very good. If you don't let it sit for 10 mins before using it (as per the manual) it never seems to lock onto a sat - but leave it for awhile while you get ready and it works a treat - I was in the bush under spruce trees covered in snow and it still worked fine. Even indoors near windows it seems to have a couple of bars or reception. Two thumbs up - just let it get a GPS fix before trying to use it... Jeff

Awful, Don't Buy One!

1
Reviewer: Mountain Man , Calgary, AB Date: December 04, 2007
Really BAD GPS - at least 200 m off my Garmin, when it happened to work. GPS takes at least 15 minutes per sample, sometimes 1/2 h, sometimes it just never works. GPS will NOT work in the trees at all. Compass triangulation off up to 15 degrees. Mine has been back to the factory twice: once for complete system meltdown, once because the face disconnected from the band. Took over 6 months each time = really bad service.

Comments from the Staff

Definitely sounds like a bad one to me. Very sorry to hear that this has been your experience with the watch and that Suunto's service took that long. I suggest demanding an entirely new replacement. Suunto's customer service has been going through some growing pains, but show staedy improvement. I certainly hope this gets resolved to your satisfaction. Thanks for your feedback.

Im a military guy I am always needing the use of a gps. This watch has saved my skin more than once. Some people say its hard to use and the book is junk and so on but I found it easier than any other unit I have used. Outstanding durability and accuracy. I love this watch period!!!

The X9i is terrible no Stars

Reviewer: William Ellis , Virginia Date: March 10, 2007
I only used this watch twice last summer and put in a drawer. I recent took it out and charged it up for hiking. The adhesive is coming loose on the face. I contacted Suunto and of course their business hours are M-F 7-5 PST. I contacted the dealer I bought it from and of couse they are assuming no responsibility. No more Suunto for me. Garmin is much better, and better support too!

Comments from The Staff:

Hey there - I'm really sorry to hear that you had trouble with your Suunto watch, and with Suunto's support. I'm not sure which dealer you bought the watch from - we, ourselves, are just a dealer, and we have a 30 day return policy. Suunto, however, cover their watches under a warranty, so if your watch broke, they should fix it for you. Let me know if you need help getting a hold of them, and I'll do what I can to help you out.

Not the outdoorsman's watch it boasts to be

1
Reviewer: LTC J Roos , United States Military Academy, West Point, NY Date: January 01, 2007
I've spent 7 months in Iraq. This watch would not last another day in country. Not well constructed for the price. The adhesive securing the plastic facing has met its match in this heat. The GPS never worked..... not stateside before leaving for the middle east and not in the middle east. I'm very disappointed in this product. Especially for the price i paid.

Comments from The Staff:

The GPS never worked? Sounds like a deffective unit? If that's the case, its covered under warranty.

Thanks!
