Suunto Core All Black Review

5
Reviewer: Luke , Albany, NY Date: November 18, 2009
I purchased the Suunto Core instead of the Casio PAW2000 Pathfinder series watch as a do it all ABC watch. It has been used it for approximately 3 weeks. So far I have zero complaints. I have used it to log ascents and descents during bike rides and long commutes. To ensure it is accurate, I calibrate it once every couple days to a known reference altitude and without fail it returns reasonably accurate measurements. Moreover, its storm alarm has been active and in sync with the changing weather. Also the sunrise/sunset time option is fantastic, I use it for amateur photography to remind me of the golden hour of time just after sunrise and before sunset for shooting. I would highly recommend this watch to anyone who was looking for an ABC watch. In fact, the only other watch in its league is the Casio PAW2000 (in a feature set comparison). Last, as a final mention the temperature sensor is accurate provided you remove the watch from your wrist and let it acclimatize to the surrounding air. Further, the hardened glass crystal scratched on mine pretty quickly, however, it was easily remedied by using some elbow grease and toothpaste.

how it's holding up after 7 months

Reviewer: Al , Gladstone, Australia Date: November 06, 2009
Have had the all black Suunto Core for 7 months now. Everything works as expected, which is works well. Have had no problems at all. The only thing I haven't worked out is how to set a bearing, other than off the north marker. The black bezel has copped a few scratches & the underlying metal shines through from underneath. Had to change the battery for the first time yesterday. At first I thought that user changeable was a joke because I wasn't able to unscrew the battery cover. I eventually found with an AUS 20 cent coin & a lot of elbow grease I got it off. New battery in, cover back on. Other than that I leave the watch in auto mode, & I just have to re-set the altitude every couple of days.

The Best of The Best!

I purchased a Core Lime Green and at first I was like Whoa this is a big watch, but I got used to it. I had no issues until the countdown timer button wouldn't work after 7 months of use, however I contacted Suunto and they replaced the watch. I use my watch to go Rafting, Canoeing, Kayaking and Hunting. The features I like most are the Storm Alarm and the Sunrise/Sunset features. It has worked everytime without fail. I need to know this important feature as to not get caught up in a flash flood when I am on the river and when to set up camp. Their home page needs a Direct phone number. It took me a while to find it. It needs to be easier to contact them. I didn't need to but in case I did it should be easier to find. Great Watch If you're an OUTDOORS Person.

Core Extreme Edition

Reviewer: Anonymous , San Francisco, CA Date: October 25, 2009
The black face is very hard to see in bright light. The case is beautiful. The perfect watch would be the Core Extreme Edition with the white face! That would be awesome. But as is, it sucks!

Great, but...

All around great watch, neat functions and design. Feels like I'm not even wearing a watch. No scratches yet (knock on wood) and I have it set and for the most part, it's accurate. The 'but' part of my title revolves around this- my pool is nine feet from the concrete edge. I took it off my wrist and let it sink to the bottom. It read 7 feet. I would understand if it read 8 cause the water is not up to the 9 foot brim, but 7 was a little disheartening. Second 'but' is this- I was hoping to catch this 'storm alarm' go off on my watch for some time. It has been raining almost bi-weekly here since I purchased the watch. Not once did the 'storm alert' go off, and there were a few that blew into town in a matter of a couple hours. I understand the logic of the altimeter/barometer sensor of this wristop computer- but if it was set in the automatic mode it should have chimed something, either storm alarm or elevation change. I would give a recommendation of Suunto with reservation. It is cool, has great functions and IMHO, the all-black (my setup) is by far the best looking. And yes, the night light is dim so as not to ruin one's night adapted vision- don't pay attention to those saying it's too dim. Actually it could go a little dimmer (ahh, my third 'but')

Great Watch!

I just upgraded from the Vector to the all black core - Wow! The watch is performing flawlessly, been using it in the field and in the H20. I really like the look, feel and functionality, INMO, initial programming of Core was much easier than the initial one with my Vector. The LCD display and back light are fine for most uses. I especially like the dual time zone capability, mineral glass face, barometer trending, and sunrise/sunset features. If your looking for an ABC watch I would recommend this over the Vector. It is well worth the additional investment of 100 bucks!

Everything I Wanted

Reviewer: SSG Bradley Mudge , Springfield, Mo Date: September 12, 2009
Being a military member constantly on the go in the field or in garrison a dependable functional watch was a must for me. I had previously owned the La Crosse XG-55 and I would have given it a 3 star rating after owning it for about a year and a half. Decided to upgrade to the Suunto Core during my latest deployment in the balkans. After owning for about 7 months, putting the watch to some rigorous environmental conditions, and using it dependently more than once I can say that it is an accurate and reliable device. It's everything it advertises to be. Barometer is spot on, the altimeter is as accurate as an air pressure based altimeter can be (much more than the cheaper XG-55), and the compass is precise even at a stand still (impossible on GPS-based compasses and difficult for many other electronic compasses). I would buy another if I ruin this one. I believe this watch to be as good as the technology allows at this time. Don't expect to rely on this watch as a sole means of navigation. While your out, check it periodically against benchmarks, your map, or GPS (given your GPS was properly calibrated ). Check the compass against a lensatic one. CALIBRATE REGULARLY. Even out in the field. The further you get from the calibrated elevation, the less precise it will be, but it has always stayed accurate for me. My advice: Do your homework on the technology before you buy and be sure that it's for you. Check the features against other watches and be sure this one has the ones you prefer. If you do choose to buy, read the instruction manual for goodness sake.

Disatisfied Customer

Reviewer: Anonymous , Irmo, SC Date: August 28, 2009
I purchased this watch and have Not been happy with its poor quality display since day-one. And yes Ive complained and been advised of the adjustments you can make to improve viewing contrast etc... I have had Casio watches for -years and wanted to try something else. If you cant see display in All natural lighting conditions what good is the watch??..what great functions there are are over-shadowed by the users inability to see through the bezel. Wish I would have held out for the Newer white-background model instead. Maybe its would be best to just stick with a proven Casio. Very Disapointed...
