Geocaching Suunto-Style

Turn your next hike or neighborhood walk into a treasure hunting adventure with geocaching. A high-tech quest, geocaching uses GPS coordinates to hide and find small treasures. Using a Suunto GPS watch, POD, or compass, geocachers set out on a journey through the backcountry or the urban jungle.
Each geocaching adventure leads to exciting discoveries, including foreign coins, small toys, and other small rewards. Feel free to take a trophy so long as you leave a new item for others to find. There is no telling where a geocaching adventure will take you. Caches have been hidden at local parks, the tops of mountains, the bottom of the sea, and the Coliseum in Rome.
The first cache was a bucket filled with a few fun finds and it was placed to test one geek's new GPS gizmo. Today, caches are hidden just for the fun of discovery and consist of weatherproof containers as fancy as army ammo boxes or as simple as plastic sandwich tubs. Caches can be large or small.
In each cache are small, inexpensive trophies. If you find a cache, create an entry in the logbook, take a trinket, and leave another trinket of equal or greater value for others to find. Always put the cache back where you found it.
Anyone can geocache, making geocaching a great family activity. For high tech geocaching, use a Suunto GPS watch like the Suunto X10. Another great geocaching gadget, the Suunto GPS POD works with the Suunto t3c, t4c, and t6c wristop training computers to create a total GPS device. Or go low tech with Suunto compasses. Geocaching with a Suunto compass may require a map, use of waypoints, and a little math, but the challenge reinforces orienteering skills and teaches kids geography.
As easy as a walk to the local park or as challenging as a scuba diving expedition, Geocaching takes enthusiasts to new places. To get started, simply register at one of the many geocaching websites: Geocaching.com, NaviCache.com, and TerraCaching.com. Get the coordinates of a cache you want to find, enter them into your Suunto GPS device, and get hunting!
Geocaching follows a few simple rules. If you take something, replace it with something of equal or greater value, make an entry in the log book, and log your experience online. Geocachers also demonstrate a firm commitment to the environment and respect for the land. Only leave caches where seekers will have little impact on the earth's natural resources and always ask permission before geocaching on private or public land.
Note that placing a cache on lands administered by the National Park Service (NPS) is illegal without first obtaining permission. Please contact your local park to obtain a special use permit or inquire about sites designated for geocaching on park property.
With your Suunto GPS watch or Suunto compass, you're ready to embark on a high tech treasure hunt. Go cache!
